I've discovered a new favorite illustrator!

I've always admired pen-and-ink illustrations from the turn of the 20th century, but never knew a name to put to it. Here's one name that I've somehow missed until now. The way he caricatures the people and animals feels like such a perfect balance; and I can tell how he would have influenced the Disney style. I think his artistic sensibilities have trickled down through the generations and influenced many others today, even myself, though I didn't know the source.

I also like the illustrations in the earliest Winnie the Pooh stories, and recently I bought an old version of the original Pinocchio story book because of its pen-and-ink illustrations.
As I write this I don't actually know who did the Winnie the Pooh illustrations, so um... let's find out!

Roberta MacDonald did the cute illustrations in Pinocchio. Unfortunately I can't find any written info on her, or images from inside the book. (By the way, the original Pinocchio story -or, at least the children's version that I read- is QUITE different than the Disney version!!)

Now that I look back I'm sure I've heard of T.S. and E. H...it just took some time for them to stick! I've seen these illustrations on many blogs, but thanks to Hans Bacher's blog today for posting a T.S. drawing and inspiring me to look into it more. I don't know why it took me so long!
